Challenge – Breaking a pattern

We have previously had challenges in geometry, lines and repetition. This time lets photograph an image where the focal point is a break in the pattern.

A common use of repetition in photography is to capture the interruption of the flow of a pattern. For example you might photograph hundreds of red bottles with one blue one.

Sometimes you’ll find these broken patterns naturally appearing around you and on other occasions you might need to manipulate the situation a little and interrupt a pattern yourself for example:

  • Add a contrasting object (color, shape, texture)
  • Removing one of the repeating objects.

Pay particular attention to where in your frame to place the break in the pattern. It might be that the Rule of Thirds comes in to play here.

Also consider your focal point in these shots – the broken pattern might be a logical spot to have everything focused sharply.

The Digital Photography School has some tips and an example at the end of this post:

You have until next Tuesday to upload your image to Cluster. Members have all been sent an invitation to join and most have done so already. If you have any trouble feel free to email Esther. We also encourage you to leave encouraging comments for other members.

I would love to receive your suggestions/requests for future challenges. Please leave them as a comment under the challenge notification in Cluster or Facebook.

We will also post this competition on our “Friends of BCC” Facebook group so our friends can still participate by sharing their images on Facebook.
